Three things...

A) DUDE. Death in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. XD YES.

ALSO THE ICEMAN. WHICH IS TO SAY THEODORE HICKMAN. FUCK. YES.

B) Pshht, Quantum of Solace, yo.

C) Probably cynical with less of the total-cynical than I once believed to be the case. Total cynic? Naw, naw. If that was the case, I'd likely've just given it all in a while ago. There's always that tricky bit of final hope. Oh, silly.

Ooh, your first "select" menu :) (do you know what I do for a living btw? I build FORMS. With radio buttons and select menus and text fields just like your polls. DREAM JOB.)

I really want to see What Just Happened. I hope it's playing where I live. In Oregon.

1. I re-read portions of novels all the time, but I rarely re-read the whole thing from start to finish.

2. Surely everyone loves Grover!

3. Cynicism/Idealism... toootally depends on the situation. But in lieu of painful death, I guess you could say I'm idealistic in theory but cynical in practice.

Death: I'm also fond of the one in Tanith Lee's Tale of the Flat Earth.

Don't know Sesame Street - we had good stuff on TV when I was a Kid, not that puppet crap.

I'm a cynical idealist.

Oh, I also feel the need to add: I really, really hate false modesty and self-deprecation. True humility is a rare find indeed.

I have read The Odyssey, The Canterbury Tales, and Gulliver's Travels AT LEAST 10 times.

Also, believe it or not I've never seen Sesame Street. My mom always felt that the muppets on the show talked poorly and would therefor teach children to talk poorly (IE Cookie Monster referring to himself as "me" constantly). Nevertheless, I heart Kermit from the Muppet show/movies.

I am so excited for Doubt that I have dreams about it. Wonderful dreams where Meryl Streep runs around accusing me of doing all sorts of horrible things, but I don't mind because I am happy to talk to a celebrity.

And sorry for excluding Quantum of Solace - I saw it on the list of upcoming movies, didn't know WTF it was, and thus, left it off the poll. Now that I realize it was fucking James Bond...yeah, I feel pretty stupid. Lol.

I hate false modesty, too, with a passion. Of course, I don't think True Humility necessarily *exists* at all. And that is part of why I picked "cynic" with no hesitation. :P

Grover was awesome. I am pretty sure Ernie was my main man as a kid (or, at least, I have a lot of pictures of myself with some Ernie doll/plushie/thing), but Grover was up there. Telly Monster, too, though I can't remember anything he ever did. I just remember the name.

I do believe it, as you've already told me. :)

I also hate false modesty (which is why I get nervous when people tell me I come across as humble (in RL! I don't think anyone's ever accused me of it on zlj :P), because if I do, I'm pretty sure that would constitute fasle modesty.

But I do think true humility (maybe not with the caps, but definitely different from the false variety) exists, and when I've encountered it in really talented people, it's often very, very refreshing, especially when it's in a setting where you would normally expect some massive egos, like among academic luminaries or high-level executives.

Note: Milton icon used ironically. Er, mostly.

And my favorite things on the SS were those monsters with the horns that came out of their head and they had bicycle horns for noses and were incredibly annoying just going around and honking their noses so the horns would make noise and they couldn't talk and just communicated with the honking and everyone hated them. I loved those things.

True. And it has Telemachos in addition to Odysseus. Their father-son story was one of the first I read and really loved.

But. The gods have a more prominent role in the Iliad and I like reading about Achilles and his hubris and great love. Achilles/Patroclus OTP 4eva <3

The one I know I've read 50+ times is Ender's Game. It's been my favorite book since seventh grade and has been the only book I've read in multiple countries (England, Scotland, Ireland, Greece, Switzerland, US, Canada). It travels with me everywhere I go overnight, and I may well have read it over 100 times. I just don't remember at this point - it's been half a lifetime! :)

I'd assume that it's more like...these people are so talented, that they're talented at everything. Including acting like they're actually humble people when they're not. :P

As for you and how you come off on LJ, I think you're a great example of why I don't think humility/modesty is important or good. You come off very confidently but you also come off as really nice and you obviously have high opinions of other people besides yourself. So, yeah. Just sayin'. Maybe IRL, people confuse niceness with humility? Or something?

I was wondering if it was Ender's Game :) I've re-read it a couple of times, too (which, for me, is a lot -- I typically don't reread books). And, hm, I wonder if Ender's Shadow counts as semi-re-reading it, too... :P

Including acting like they're actually humble people when they're not. :P

Hmmm... it's actually harder for me to believe that somebody can convincingly pull off false humility like that than to believe in the existence of true humility, if that makes sense... Because at least some people seem to be consistently humble, even with close friends, where there really isn't any benefit to be derived from coming across as such.

I do find it difficult to understand *how* talented people can be humble, because that's a tendency that's pretty foreign to me :P

Maybe IRL, people confuse niceness with humility? Or something?

I think that's partly it, because, let's face it, a lot of the arrogant folks, especially if it's something they're vocal about, *are* jerks, and this engenders a tendency to assume that all non-humble people are jerks and anyone who is not a jerk must therefore be humble. But I think partly at least what it is is that LJ tends to bring out the self-centeredness in people, and the introspection -- not a bad thing, but sort of intrinsic to the medium, since an LJ is at least partly a personal journal.

My opinion of myself is no different, in LJ or in real life, but I sure do talk about myself a whole lot more on LJ, and so my lack of humility is a lot more evident. While in RL, I tend to avoid "bragging", because I feel it is gauche, and thus people interpret that as humility. Whereas, no, I really do think I'm awesome, I just feel it's tiresome and poor tone to keep telling people how awesome I am. Except in my LJ :)

And thank you for the compliments, of course :)
