A side note on question 1: My opinions on all of those creatures really depend on the story/movie/whatever they're in, since they're often portrayed very differently.

As far as the alcohol goes, I'd probably be content to drink my girlfriend's ginger ale-cherry juice-vodka mix for the rest of my life, as long as she gets the ratio right. Mmm, inebriating deliciousness.
(Though you're probably aware of this, direwolves aren't entirely mythological - they did exist in North America, thousands of thousands of years ago. I think I like GRRM's visualization of the wolves a bit better than the reality, though.)
