I'm surprised I'm the only person who's picked "similar religious beliefs" and "similar political leanings". To me, those two are more important than "similar interests". It's not like I ask someone beforehand, but I seem to gravitate towards liberal atheists/agnostics. I just don't get along with deeply religious and/or conservative people. I have a friend who constantly changes religious beliefs and political leanings, and she annoys the shit out of me even though we have a lot of other stuff in common. When the subject turns to religion or politics, we usually end up in a fight.

To me, personal characteristics (intelligence, humor, etc.) are way more important than political and religious beliefs or interests. If someone had no similar interests or beliefs, I'd still love to be be their friend if they were intelligent, hilarious, gutsy, etc. Anyway, I'd say interests are more important than beliefs, to me, since those would often determine what you actually do when you hang out with your friends. However, our difference in our friend requirements might also have to do with the fact that I don't mind religious/political (and most other kinds of) arguments at all. I can even enjoy them from time to time. I can't explain everyone else's reasoning for not picking those two, but that's mine.

Well, in any case, a few other people have agreed now that you've posted this comment. :D

Haha, yeah, I understand your point of view, but the truth is I'm just incredibly judgmental about stuff like that. I'm not proud of it, but it's the way it is. I will totally judge people based on whether or not they're religious (I don't discriminate between religions; I think they're all equally ridiculous), and since I'm gay and rely on social security I don't much care for conservatives. I'm not saying I actively despise these people, I'm just saying I'd find it really hard to be friends with them.

Similar interests aren't that big a deal to me because I think you can always find something to do, or to talk about, as long as your personalities or temperaments are compatible.

Just for the record, I don't normally refer to guys around 30 years of age as 'gentlemen,' but you said ALL the words you'd use to describe the average guy, and I definitely always err on the side of 'gentleman' when gesturing to a 'guest' who needs help in the upscale foodservice storefront at which I am employed.

Also...I don't really think any of those things are 'crucial' to me befriending someone (they definitely all help!)...I checked the ones I value most in people, but really I've had friends who didn't have that great of a sense of humor, who haven't shared my interests, political views, who aren't the kindest people... For me it's really the whole person as a package.

Well, if you're *very* bored, you could come see the ridiculous Narrows Community Theater Christmas Revue thing. It's at Henry Grattan's (a bar on 88th St. & 3rd Ave.) on Thursday night at 8:00 and at Christ Church (73rd St. & Ridge Blvd.) on Friday night at 7:30.

Otherwise, we can get together after Christmas when I'll be jobless and loaded with free time (hopefully not for too long, of course). I was actually planning on visiting Liz's apartment in White Plains the weekend after New Year's (Jan. 5th/6th), if you'd be interested in accompanying me.

P.S. I forgot to tell you! Last night my co-workers and I went to this "industry" presentation of a musical, called Busker Alley, that may be coming to Broadway in the future, provided all goes well. Guess who was sitting right in front of me? Professor Montel, from our History of American Musical Theater course! He seemed just the same as ever, all wonderful and grandfatherly. :) Just thought you'd like to know that Michael Montel is, indeed, alive and well!

ha thats really funny...one night its at a bar and the next night a church? what a contrast. i would love to come but my mom is making me come home for Christmas tomorrow night. (I'm actually glad to be going home, but I am sad to miss out on the second show you've invited me to lol )
I do want to come with you to visit Liz though. Let me know! As for professor Montel, I'm glad he is still alive and well. He seems as ancient as father time! I always appreciated that his eyes were still sparkly and his british non-british persona was so vibrant lol.

...and before the bar and the church it was at a senior center! Variety is the spice of life, Kathleen!

Anyway, Liz just sent me a message about this weekend being a little complicated, so I will probably message both of you soon to try to figure out something that will be convenient for all. As of now, I want us to all go see I'm Not There. Does that seem like the kind of movie you'd like or no?
